I feel so blessed to have discovered Reiki on my travels through India. It really opened my eyes up to this beautiful, holistic therapy that assists us to relax, restore and heal on so many levels.
Reiki is a gentle, hands-on technique which promotes deep relaxation that can lead to natural healing. Originally founded in Japan, Rei translates to universal wisdom and ki means life force energy (otherwise known as ‘chi’ in Chinese medicine). Therefore Reiki may be considered a form of energy healing.
The practitioner uses gentle touch to shift and restore energy within the body, leaving you feeling deeply relaxed. Life is busy, we are constantly on-the-go and unknowingly in a state of ‘fight-or-flight’. When the body is in this state of ‘stress’, due to a full work schedule, family commitments, lack of sleep, health issues or simply just the day-to-day busyness of life, then it is unable to perform its natural functions of rest, repair and renewal. Reiki invites a state of relaxation. Similar to practices such as yoga and meditation, it switches the body into the parasympathetic nervous system, and therefore out of fight-or-flight. It is here that true healing can occur on all levels - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.
Chakras are the energy centres in our body. They are likened to spinning wheels, that when balanced and healthy, are constantly in motion. At times in our life, these wheels can become 'stuck'. We might feel out of sorts, stressed, anxious or become ill. Reiki helps to unblock, align and balance the chakras by shifting energy. Each chakra has a physical and energetic correlation in the body. For example, the Solar Plexus Chakra is located above the navel, linked to the digestive system and associated with personal strength, power, self-confidence and identity. Often if we can identify the energetic cause, the physical can be resolved too.
At the most basic – and beautiful – level, Reiki is a deep form of relaxation which gives rest to the nervous system. In our busy lives, who isn’t looking for ways to relax? For this reason, I recommend Reiki as an incredible self-care tool for absolutely anyone!
Reiki assists with:
- deep relaxation and a greater sense of wellbeing and peace
- relief from stress, anxiety or overwhelm
- deeper, more restful sleep
- aiding recovery from injuries and easing muscle pain
- faster recovery or healing from illness, by relieving symptoms and uncovering possible causes – each physical ailment the body has an energetic cause
- bringing relief from chronic pain
- regulating blood pressure and strengthening the immune system
- feeling energised, emotionally stronger and a sense of clarity
What happens in a Reiki session?
My Reiki treatment rooms are like a little oasis. Imagine candles burning, essential oils in the diffuser, soft music – a place of peace and calm. During a treatment you lay down and the practitioner gently places their hands in different positions on your body, holding for a few minutes at a time. When I work with clients there is no set choreographed order that I use, instead I like to be guided by my intuition as to where the energy is most needed.
How will I feel during, or after, a treatment?
The most common feelings are warmth, heat or tingling but there are so many sensations that can occur. Sometimes, both the client and I will get a similar sensation like an itchy nose, which has an energetic meaning in itself and always interesting to explore! Afterwards you will feel deeply rested, yet energised. Clients often describe the feeling of ‘floating’ and I think that’s a pretty nice way for them to leave!
